Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The tapestry of history has now been woven with a paranormal thread. A brillant storyteller Mr. Grahame- Smith has kept this reader enthralled and now taking a different look into history with a vivid imagination.
The history, myth of this country's most interesting presidents now has a twist. Beginnning with the strange departure of his mother, the "truth" of her death, the knowledge gained of the underworld of vampires in the New World. Through his boyhood up until his death this tale written as story and Mr. Lincoln's journal finds the reader enthralled well after the last page is read.
I recommend this book to those that have the imagination, the inquistive mind, and those that simply want a book that they will find hard to put down. * And remember the creaks of your house at night, simply could be the house settling - then again you never can be quite sure.

Review: Memories of Murder By: Lara Nance
Memories of Murder by Lara Nance
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Maeve has bound herself from using the witchcraft that saved her in an attack, she has picked up and moved away - hiding herself in a small town with deep, dark secrets that seem not to want to rest. In her new job as a nurse practicioner at the retirement home she is immediately greeted with a falling body of one of the patients. The new sheriff in town, Paul has been assigned the case and sparks begin to fly (as each is growing from their past). Maeve's mother and aunts come to Rolling Gap because of the signs and visions they bein to recieve, believing the danger lurking is more powerful than one can fight. When the dead are unrested and the evil that lurks grows can Maeve, Paul, and her family fight the darkness and bring light to those that need it?
I could not put this down, wonderfully written, with twists, turns, a supernatural plot added in - I became fearful with each passing chapter and found the ending fulfilling. The characters jumped off the pages, secondary characters being very colorful and vivid you can't help but find them endearing.

Review: Fever By: Lauren DeStefano
Fever by Lauren DeStefano
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Continuing where Ms. DeStefano left off in Wither we follow the escape of Rhine and Gabriel.
Written in a way that takes the readers into a opium smoke filled adventure, everything hazy, heart racing, and filled with secondary characters that you immediately love or love to hate. Rhine and Gabriel wash ashore and find the first place they can in the arms of a paranoid Madam with a carnival show of ladies. It is here that the tone takes place for the rest of the book. Somewhere in this dystopian novel you find humanity both good and wretched, the need of survival in all the characters. Through escape and escape Rhine, Gabriel, and a malformed little girl, Maddie find themselves in Manahattan - searching for home. On the chase is Housemaster Vaughn and time appears to running out as Rhine gets horribly ill. With Rowan no where to be found, an unlikely find for the Trio is found in the home of an orphanage. How long can that piece of happiness last, is there a cure for Rhine or is death the answer? As the story twists and turns, as in Madam's ferris wheel, the reader is sure to feel the ups and downs - and the ending leaves much promise for the next in the series.
This is a great follow up to Wither and at times I was pleasantly suprised by the diversity of the syle of writing that seemed to change with tone through the same author. I highly recommend this series and if this is what Ms. DeStefano is capable of I can't wait to read more from her.

Review: Good Christian Bitches By: Kim Gatlin
Good Christian Bitches by Kim Gatlin
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
"...for Heaven's sake, don't let Jesus get in the way of a good agenda."
I wonder how much of this book came from personal experience? I am sure some of you know the hypocrites, the group that during Bible Study Prayer Group find more time to gossip (through the prayer requests) than actually learn something. This is a great tongue in cheek book that brings the "prayer room" into light.
Amanda Vaughn has returned to her hometown, divorce papers in hand, and two children in tow. Her presence is noted by each and all within Hillside Park, and not necessarily happily so..afterall there is only so many men available (or in some cases not available but already have someone else). With the green eyed monster and old rivalries, can Amanda even have a chance at returning and making a new life for herself? The annual Longhorn Ball was destroyed last year by the Chairwoman's behavior and has found it's way to Amanda's lap. Is someone out to get her and can she overcome without being a GCB?
I really enjoyed this book but found the ending rushed, the new connection Amanda makes with an old crush superficial. I do recommend this as a great, funny, fast paced read, it will put a secret smile on your face everytime you pull into the Church parking lot.

Review: Born Wicked By: Jessica Spotswood
Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Welcome Ms. Spotswood! What a wonderful tale of the Cahill sisters filled with danger, intrigue, and romance.
Cate Cahill lives in the New World, filled with the Brotherhood - whom teach the wickedness of women and their need not to be anything other than their husband's chattel, the Sisterhood - a branch for all intents and purposes the woman's flip of a coin of the Brotherhood (but look deeper, they are much, much more and have an agenda), witchcraft (her and her sisters may be part of a prophesy, they are not the only ones with this gift). Cate is the oldest and despite having her father, she is raising herself and her sisters, Maura and Tess. The only messages she has from her mother are cryptic in a diary and her godmother, who is in an asylum because of witchcraft. The promise and message requires Cate to protect and watch over them, which will require sacrifice. Is Cate able to sacrifice the new love that she has found, her independence and hope of living a life she imagines or is the prophesy already set in motion?
I throughly enjoyed this book. And was disappointed that I could not finish the Cahill story, it is part of a series. The imagery and the characters jump out, leaving the reader devouring every page. I can't wait for the next in this series.

Review: H20 By: Austin Boyd and Brannon Hollingsworth
H2O the Novel by Austin Boyd
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
A most amazing, vivid tale filled with amazing imagery. Kate Pepper a 29yr old woman that seems to have it all together, but scratch the surface and there is a much deeper hurt and a much deeper purpose. As she goes through her life, in one heart racing moment she is hit by a vision. These visions come each time water comes in contact with her and their persistance and intensity only increases.
Kate has it all, a great job, dating her boss (who is verbally, emotionally, and physically abusive), an expensive bike -- or does she? What can she be missing? As the visions appear more happens to her, from her injuries, crashing her bike, to losing a job, losing her boyfriend (which is no loss), to noticing the simple qualities of life. What is the connection between it all, from the simple kindness of a special needs waitress to a boy that is in recovery from cancer, will she find that connection and make it?
Water flows throughout the book, from rain to snow, from shower water to tears and all affect Kate and her visions. She is drowning in a life that has no meaning and as the past, present and future converge only one thing is needed.
There is a lot of symbolism in this book and I am sure that each person will find different symbols closer to the surface and the meaning the reader can find long after putting down the book. "Come thirsty and drink deeply from the living water" I once read in another book, and H20 will help with the thirst.

Review: Game Of Thrones By: George R.R. Martin
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
"When you play the game of thrones, you win or die"
This is an amazing book, epic in a sense.
Welcome to the world of the Seven Kingdoms, filled with deceit, fabled animals, the Others in The Haunted Forest, death, survival, and amazing characters. Written in third person but each chapter written in different main characters the book flows fluidly.
The King has come to Winterfell appointing his new Hand, the Long Summer is ending, and everyone is looking to take over the Throne. There is no trust and as Kings Landing has as many secret tunnels there are more secrets and motives to uncover. Like chess pieces moving across the board, each character brings forth this "game of thrones" bringing with them kidnapping, murder, destruction to the buildup of war.
The book ends with the reader wanting more and thankfully there is.
If I could give this novel more than 5 stars I would. I was taken into another place and time, into the minds of such well written third dementional characters that are still stuck in my mind. From description to style Mr. Martin has outdone himself.
